Dear Friends,
As we ring in 2023 I’d like to share with you our accomplishments from this past year and offer some exciting news about just a few of our plans for the coming year.
Thinking about 2022, we are grateful for all the generous people who joined or renewed their membership and the folks who made general donations or memorial gifts. Your support is essential in continuing the work of the Historical Society & Museum.
An exciting new chapter began this summer when the recently created position of Museum Administrator was filled by Susan Kelly Panian. Susan and her family have been Three Lakes summer residents for four generations embracing the multiple offerings of the area, valuing its history and forming lasting friendships. Susan has worked creatively to present to the Society’s Board of Directors opportunities for programming and fund-raising while responding to the ever-changing needs of the museum’s buildings and grounds.
With the advent of a Museum Administrator, Kyle McMahon, the museum’s curator, has more opportunities to do what she likes most and does well…create new and enhance existing exhibits and share in museum program offerings. We are grateful to Kyle for her dedicated and steady service during staff turnovers in the last two years. We now look forward to a new exhibit based on the Chain-of-Lakes and cabin living. A small museum building will be renovated to reflect early cabin life on the chain. It will be a fun and informative exhibit, sure to delight anyone with an interest in the romance and nostalgia associated with those early days on the lake.
This past summer we welcomed two Three Lakes High School students as paid interns. They faithfully manned the Visitors Center, collecting admission fees, helping with book shop sales, and oversaw opening and closing the Museum buildings each day. They were a terrific addition to the team and they could add their hours and experience to their School Jobs program.
In early 2023 we will be launching an initiative called “Tell Us Your Stories.” Much like the original founders of the Historical Society did when compiling family history for The Pine, The Plow and the Pioneer books, we are reaching out to long-time families to update their stories and also to newer arrivals for their stories, which will help us write the history of Three Lakes today. We will send out more detailed information soon.
And watch for news of boat tours sponsored by the Historical Society in 2023. You will not want to miss these informative adventures showcasing the historic structures on your favorite Chain-of-Lakes.
Again, thanks for your continued support of one of Three Lakes cultural treasures.
I hope your holiday season has been enjoyable with good memories fun experiences, and hopes for your tomorrows.
Bill Hayes, Board President
